Why this school?
- Founded in 1865, The University of Maine (UMaine) is a land and sea grant institution and the flagship campus of the University of Maine System. It is the largest research university and also the only institution in Maine classified as a research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. UMaine offers extensive academic opportunities expected from a flagship research university, with the close-knit feel of a small college. Top students are invited to join the Honors College, one of the oldest and most prestigious honors colleges in the nation. UMaine has 37 academic buildings, 30 administrative buildings, 18 residence halls, 18 specific laboratory facilities, 10 sports facilities, 5 museums, and a-state-of-the-art recreation and fitness center.
- UMaine is also the state's only public research university housing facilities with international reputations for excellence. UMaine students have extraordinary opportunities to gain real-world experience through research and experiential learning. The undergraduates have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty, conduct fieldwork, and participate in internships around the world. Wildlife ecology studies learn about animal behavior by working with wildlife biologists and baby black bears. Many engineering students secure co-ops that typically lead to employment immediately upon graduation. Education majors have the opportunity to take advantage of urban, rural, and international student teaching opportunities, and Marine science students have the opportunity to spend a semester by the sea at our world renowned Darling Marine Center.
- Notable alumni include the bestselling author Stephen King, who is famous for writing contemporary fiction, Bernard Lown - the original developer of the DC defibrillator and the cardioverter, as well as a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and Paul Kariya - a former professional ice hockey winger who played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League.
